Wisdom Teeth Removal

If the wisdom teeth erupt at an angle or if there is not enough space for them, these teeth can cause serious dental complications.

Wisdom teeth removal can relieve pain and prevent problems such as infection and overcrowding, protecting your oral health and appearance.

At our Rockville, MD, dental office, Dr. Shannen Manlucu can perform wisdom teeth removal with minimal discomfort...

When Is Wisdom Tooth Removal Necessary?

There are several circumstances under which Dr. Manlucu may recommend removing you or your child's wisdom teeth.

Overcrowding

The most common issues involve limited spacing. As the wisdom teeth grow in, they can push the other teeth out of alignment, reversing the effects of orthodontic treatment.

Impaction or Partial Eruption

When there is not enough room in the jaw for the third molars to erupt properly or when the wisdom teeth grow in at an angle, they can become impacted, or trapped under the gums. They may also only partially erupt. This can increase the risk of:

  • Infection
  • Pain
  • Tooth decay
  • Gum disease
  • Cysts
  • Tumors
  • Damage to a neighboring tooth

When Should the Wisdom Teeth Be Removed?

Infographic about wisdom teeth

Your wisdom teeth usually come in between ages 17 and 21. Many dentists recommend removing wisdom teeth before age 20. Wisdom teeth that are not removed should be consistently monitored because they may cause problems in the future.

Do You or Your Child Need an Extraction?

Before recommending removal, Dr. Manlucu will examine you or your child's oral health and take a series of digital X-rays. Generally, a full panoramic x-ray of the teeth and jaw is necessary. Using these images, we will plan and perform your surgery at our Rockville office. If the wisdom teeth are severely impacted, we may refer you to an oral surgeon.

Recovering from Wisdom Teeth Removal

It typically takes four days to one week to recover from wisdom tooth removal. Be sure to follow all recovery instructions provided by our dentist to minimize the severity of side effects and ensure a smooth recovery.

Stop the Bleeding

When you leave our Rockville office, you will bite down on a piece of gauze to stop any bleeding.

Pain Medication

Use pain medication as needed to reduce discomfort.

Ice the Area

You can apply ice to your face to help with swelling and pain.

Protect the Blood Clot

During the first few days, a blood clot should form over the extraction site. You should avoid brushing near the surgical site, spitting, or using a straw so that the clot remains undisturbed.
